Even if you don't live near a Disney theme park, you can still experience the magic of Disney close to home with Disney On Ice. Expect an evening of unique entertainment for the whole family, beloved characters skating and spinning on ice, and the wide-eyed wonder for which Disney is renowned. To maximize the fun factor, check out these eight tips forDisney On Ice with kids.
1. Use a discount.
There's no reason to pay full price for tickets if you can get them at lower price, right? I've seen discounted Disney On Ice tickets for sale from Living Social. Take a peek before you buy those seats!
2. Stay warm.
When going to see a show with the word "ice" in the title, you'd think wearing something warm would be a no-brainer. I was surprised, however, to see many children and adults sporting tank tops or t-shirts with shorts at the Disney On Ice performance my family attended in Phoenix. As parents we are all so busy trying to remember the date of the next recital and whose turn it is to feed the dog, it can be easy to overlook the obvious. Don't let your little ones shiver throughout this chilly show. Be sure to bring jackets or a blanket to stay cozy when watching Disney On Ice with kids.
3. Pick the right Disney On Ice for your family.
Before attending Disney On Ice the first time, I didn't realize there were more than one themed show from which to pick. In fact, there are five different themes in total! Choices vary according to location and performance date. Click on the video below to for a taste of the new Disney On Ice Mickey's Search Party.
Disney On Ice 2019 show options
- Frozen! – This performance focuses on the Frozen story, starring Elsa, Anna and Olaf. There are also special appearances by Disney princesses, Woody, Dory, Buzz Lightyear and others.
- Dare to Dream – Disney princesses, including Moana, star in classic adventures.
- Worlds of Enchantment – This sampler of Disney and Pixar stories includes Cars, The Little Mermaid, Toy Story and Frozen.
- Mickey's Search Party – Expect acrobatics and stunts as skaters follow Captain Hook's treasure map in search of Tinkerbell. Coco, Moana and characters from Toy Story, Frozen, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid make appearances.
- 100 Years of Magic – A cast of 50 characters celebrate 100 years of Disney. In addition to classic characters like Mickey and Minnie, you'll see friends from Frozen, Toy Story, Finding Dory, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and more.
4. Get in on the glow in the dark fun.
Dimmed and dramatic lighting, and even fire add excitement and drama to a Disney On Ice show. To add to the fun, Disney has plenty of light-up electronic doo-dads for sale. If your kids are like mine, they'll beg you throughout the event to purchase some sort of glowing toy.
If you don't mind doling out big bucks for the toys, go for it! But if you'd like your children to get in on the glowing amusement without spending tons of cash, bring your own glow in the dark necklaces, bracelets or toys. Check out these affordable glow in the dark options available for purchase from Amazon that you can buy without the hefty markup.
5. Dress up in Disney garb.
Why not make Disney On Ice even more memorable by sporting your Mickey Mouse ears or Disney character festooned clothing? (You will want to remove any distracting hats for the sake of other viewers during the performance.) Take it up a notch and get the kiddos Disney costumes. This is especially exciting for the preschooler set, which loves dressing up as like their favorite Disney princess or Toy Story character. Note that Disney On Ice does not allow costumes for attendees aged 14 and older.
6. Set expectations for Disney On Ice with kids.
You might be wondering if your child has the attention span for this type of performance. How long is Disney On Ice? Different shows vary in length slightly, but plan on spending about 1.5 to 2 hours at this ice show, including a 15- to 20-minute intermission. Before you go, explain to young children that they will need to sit still throughout Disney On Ice.
Additionally, if your kids have their hearts set on seeing a specific character that may not make an appearance in your performance, be sure to give a word of warning before heading to Disney On Ice with kids. The first time we went to Disney On Ice, my family saw Worlds of Fantasy, which featured all sorts of Disney characters. My then fourth grade daughter was shocked when the lights turned on. She said, "It's over already? But where are the other characters? I thought we were going to see Cinderella and Frozen!" Still, she declared the show, "The most awesome thing ever!"
7. Bring the fun of Disney On Ice home.
The fun of Disney on Ice isn't limited to the ice rink. Get kids pumped before the show, or keep the magic skating along afterwards with these downloads. Print this Disney On Ice coloring sheet or this Disney On Ice word search. Or, take a look at this big Disney Pixar coloring book, available from Amazon.
8. Book early to nab the best seats.
The sooner you book, the better choice of seats you'll get. Ticket pricing varies, with front row seats sold at a premium. Book your Disney On Ice tickets now!
